Light has an effect on how we perceive the world and everything in it. If you run a pub, you know how important it is to have the right lighting; after all, it can greatly impact the ambience. But did you know that depending on the light, your customers will see the world differently?
Photic Sneeze Reflex
Around 18% to 35% of the human population is thought to be affected by this reflex. This heritable condition results in sneezing when one is exposed to a bright light. It’s not understood what causes the reflex, but modern day scientists believe that there is an affected cranial nerve close to the optic nerve. This nerve is responsible for facial sensation and motor control, and it potentially sends information to the brain which is intended for the optic nerve and tells the brain about the existence of an irritant which needs to be cleared out.
Mood lighting is very important for your pub; you don’t want your customers to keep sneezing!
Light Bends Around Corners
Diffraction is the process that describes light bending around corners. It’s a very subtle process, and you won’t notice it if you don’t look for it. Travelling in a straight line isn’t light’s best feature; it finds a way to slowly spread out and diffract, which is useful for lighting your establishment. You can use this feature to place lighting in your pub in a way that optimises the space.
Humans Emit Light
Although not as useful as real lighting since we can’t see it, humans emit light. At 1000 times lower than the naked eye can perceive, it won’t help to light your pub. As energy changes in the metabolism, it’s released as light – or as ultra-weak photon emission. Actual light bulbs are surer ways of achieving the right ambience!
What Colour is it Really?
The visible spectrum is composed of coloured lights, but objects aren’t. So, the colour of the object will depend on the light. For example, a banana looks yellow to your eyes. However, it only looks yellow because when white light (comprised of all colours) hits the banana, all hues except for yellow get absorbed. Yellow gets reflected back at us, which means that we see a yellow banana.
Your mind interprets the invisible light waves at different frequencies as different colours; objects themselves don’t have colour. Which is why lighting is so important! It can completely transform an environment and the objects in it, depending on what colour you use.
