If you remember in our last post, we talked about people who feel so confident after changing a light bulb that they may want to tackle any electrical problem they come across. While a great notion, it’s a big no-no from us as you could be putting yourself at risk, as well as others if you wire something wrong. However, we understand that after that light bulb change, you’re feeling pretty pumped, so as a leading commercial electrician in Liverpool, we thought we’d give you some instructions on the jobs you can do!
The first of these is one of the simplest, yet it looks tricky and involves wires so you can still feel like a power-house electrician while you do it, and that job is changing a fuse.
The first thing to do before you change a fuse is to make sure that the power outlet is turned off and you’ve taken the plug out from the outlet.
Firstly, you need to unscrew the retaining screw on the underside of the plug, between the pins. Once that cover is removed, the fuse is incredibly easy to spot, so lift it out.
Now you need to note what rating the fuse is; you don’t want to go through the trouble of trying to change the fuse only to realise it’s the wrong rating and doesn’t work. If in doubt, check the appliance’s instructions or get in touch with the manufacturer. The general rule of thumb is to use a 3 amp fuse for appliances up to 720 watts and a 13 amp for appliances from 720 watts to 3000 watts.
Now all you have to do is fit the replacement fuse in the holder, but ensure that you check that all the conductors are securely held in their terminals, with absolutely no stray strands of wire. Check that the flex is held securely in its clamp and put the cover back on the plug with its retaining screw.
And it’s a simple as that – that’s literally all you need to do to change a fuse! Now you can feel like an electrical whizz without much effort or risk. Of course, there are a few other tricks we can show you to keep that spirit alive, so be sure to check back with this blog in the coming weeks, and we’ll be sure to enlighten you on more electrical fixes we think everyone can do!
Remember though, if it’s something a lot trickier, don’t try and fix it yourself – call a professional. Here at BD Electrical, we offer electrician services to both home and commercial properties, so if you’re having an electrical issue, contact us on 0151 482 5534 and let our experts help!
