It’s an obvious statement to make, but electricity is one of the biggest dangers in your home if not properly checked and maintained. In previous posts, we’ve talked about how to spot electrical dangers in your home and how you can prevent them from escalating. As electrical contractors in Liverpool, we believe that half the battle with safe electricity isn’t only knowing the dangers, but also knowing the electrics themselves.
Your property will contain some of the following:
The fuse box contains each individual power supply to various parts of your home. Most likely you have had an occasion where you lose power and you find yourself flipping the different switches inside the box to get it back on. Also in this unit is the main switch which can be essential in preventing electrical dangers in your home as it allows you to turn off your supply of electricity in an emergency.
Most people will have at some point had to change the fuse in a plug socket. These little lifesavers will automatically disconnect the plug when a fault of current passes through it, preventing it from overloading.
Residual Current Devices (RCD)
If you come into contact with a live electrical current, such as in the form of a bare wire, the resulting shock can prove fatal, which is why an RCD can be instrumental in preventing this. With constant monitoring of the electric flow through a circuit, it shuts off the current almost instantly if it detects the electricity flowing through an unintended path such as a person.
Many people don’t know much about the wiring in their home, but it is ageing or faulty wiring that is the leading cause of electrical fires in the home. This can be easily avoided if you have your cables, sockets, switches and other accessories regularly checked. There are some simple ways to know how old your wires are:
– Cables coated in fabric (before the 1960s)
– Fuse boxes with wooden backs (before the 1960s)
– Wall mounted bathroom light switches (the 1960s)
– Switches and sockets mounted in skirting boards (the 1950s)
In this modern age, electricity improves and is central to our daily lives, so knowing what you’re dealing with can be a great help in preventing dangers.
