The holiday season is approaching, and with it will come a plethora of sparkling lights to create the perfect Christmas atmosphere. However, decorative lighting during this season can be a danger all in itself. Leaving decorative lighting unchecked, unsupervised and damaged is one of the most common issues facing the festive season. It is something that we here at B&D Electrical are keen to prevent.
So, how do you ensure that this Christmas is lit up with joy and not the flicker of flames?
Christmas Tree Tips
There are some basic checks that everyone should run through in the process of seasonal decoration every year:
- Look for broken bulbs and fray in any wiring.
- Untangle the wires carefully, as they can become damaged in storage and doing so will give a thorough inspection.
- Don’t overload plug sockets with more than two strings of light.
- Replace bulbs that have issues such as cracks or that are not working.
- Turn the lights off every night or when leaving the house. Never leave them unsupervised.
- Keep the lights separate from anything flammable.
Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list. But a few simple checks can mean the difference between a fire and peace of mind. Christmas is a time to be merry, but that doesn’t mean it is also a time to be negligent to basic health and safety in your home or workplace.
Are you still unsure whether or not your decorative lighting is safe? That is reason enough not to use it. Safety should always come first, so if you feel that your lights are not safe then they should be disposed of immediately. Replacing them may be an expense, but it is a small price to pay in order to maintain the safety of your premises.
You can also purchase additional electrical devices to put the lights on timers or even manage the voltage to a safer level. These are useful in offices or outside of homes especially, as it means that a specific employee does not have to be responsible for the safety of the decorative lighting.
If you still face issues, you should ensure that you know where the fuse box is in order to react quickly in an emergency.
