Electricity is something that we use every single day, whether it’s for cooking, heating or entertainment purposes. It’s a staple in the modern household and something that most of us couldn’t live without.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that it is used so often and for so many things, there is always the risk of things going wrong. If electrical items in your house aren’t properly set up or cared for, you could be putting yourself in harm’s way (as well as everyone else in your home).
We have put together a guide to some of the most common electrical hazards in the home, so that you can make sure that you aren’t making any mistakes.
Faulty or poor wiring is one of the biggest causes of electrical incidents in the home and unfortunately, it’s sometimes very hard to detect. It can have serious consequences in the home, including fires and power surges.
Other wiring problems happen when they are damaged or worn away, which can lead to serious electrical accidents. You should check your wires regularly, but we warn you against carrying out any DIY work – you should definitely ring in a professional.
Electric Outlets Placed Near Water
Water and electricity do not get along. In fact, they are the worst of enemies. It’s important that any electric outlets that you have in the kitchen or bathroom are kept at a safe distance from the sink, shower or bath. Water conducts electricity, so to avoid any accidents; you shouldn’t be putting the two anywhere near each other. Protective coverings can assure that they have extra protection.
Using The Wrong Light Bulbs
Purchasing and installing the wrong light bulb for your lamp could have some horrible consequences. If you purchase one with a higher wattage, you could have a problem. Lamps aren’t made to handle anything higher than the recommended wattage, and a fire could start because of this.
You should always buy the bulbs that are meant for the lamp – don’t be tempted to choose something more powerful!
